Princeton University's Department of Music offers a comprehensive undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Music. The program emphasizes criticism, analysis, composition, performance, and cross-disciplinary artistic exploration. Students can choose to major in Music, focusing on composition, musicology, and theory, or pursue one of two minors: a general Minor in Music (MUS) for scholarly and creative study, and a Minor in Music Performance (MPP) centered on rigorous vocal, instrumental or conducting practice. The curriculum includes coursework in Culture & Criticism (such as music history, theory, ethnomusicology) and Materials & Making (such as composition, improvisation, electronic music), with opportunities for private lessons, ensemble participation, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Advanced performers may audition for the performance concentration. The department also supports numerous study abroad programs with international conservatories and unique experiential learning options. Students benefit from access to world-renowned faculty, diverse ensembles, and extensive performance opportunities, both on campus and in the community.
