The graduate programs in Materials Science and Engineering at the A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland College Park, offer two distinct degrees: the Master of Science (M.S.), which includes both thesis and non-thesis options with a strong foundation in the physics and chemistry of materials, and the Professional Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), which is coursework-based and designed for working engineers. The programs cover multidisciplinary topics ranging from materials processing to nanomaterials and energy applications, and provide access to advanced laboratories and research centers. Graduates are positioned for careers in high-tech industries, research, and further academic study. The M.S. degree requires completion of 30 credits, core courses, and either a thesis or scholarly paper; the M.Eng. requires 30 credits (ten courses), all coursework, with no thesis.
