The Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages at the University of Maryland, College Park (College of Arts and Humanities) is designed for undergraduate students wishing to achieve advanced proficiency in two Romance languages (selected from French, Italian, and Spanish). The program is jointly offered by the Department of French and Italian and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Students complete a total of 45 credits: 21 credits in each of two chosen languages, plus an additional 3 credits at the 400-level in either language. Coursework covers language acquisition, literature, culture, and civilization, with an emphasis on advanced competence in reading, writing, speaking, and cultural understanding. Literature or civilization courses may not be taken in translation. The program prepares graduates as well-rounded global citizens ready for careers where multilingual skills and cultural competence are valued. Study abroad opportunities, internships, and undergraduate research are encouraged.
