New York University Institute of Fine Arts (IFA) offers a four‑year dual‑degree that confers both the MS in Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works and the MA in History of Art and Archaeology. Students receive object-based training that integrates conservation theory and practice, conservation science, and art-historical/archaeological study. From the second year, students specialize in areas such as conservation of paintings; objects (including textiles); paper and photographs (including library and archives/books); and time‑based media, with options to focus on modern & contemporary or archaeological art conservation. The program leverages individualized instruction from conservators and scientists across New York City’s leading museums and laboratories and culminates in a two‑semester internship in the fourth year arranged with the Conservation Center and advisors. All IFA MS/MA requirements (languages, academic standards, thesis) apply to dual‑degree students.
