NYU Courant’s MS in Mathematics (at the Graduate School of Arts & Science) provides the core graduate mathematics curriculum with options for specialization in pure and applied topics. A typical study plan includes real analysis, complex analysis, and linear algebra, followed by foundational courses such as probability, scientific computing, and differential equations, with access to advanced graduate courses across pure and applied mathematics. The program is designed to broaden knowledge rather than serve primarily as PhD preparation; students targeting a PhD are advised to apply directly to PhD programs. Departmental MacCracken fellowships are not available to master’s students. High-performing students (GPA ≥3.7 with at least 18 credits) may opt to write a master’s thesis under faculty supervision, subject to approval and reader requirements.
