NYU Graduate School of Arts & Science’s Department of Classics offers the MA in Classics, providing advanced training in Greek and Latin languages and literature alongside coursework in history, archaeology/ancient art, and ancient philosophy. The department participates in consortial arrangements with CUNY and Fordham, giving MA students access to courses across the three institutions. Within NYU, Classics maintains close ties with units such as the Center for Ancient Studies, Onassis Program in Hellenic Studies, the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, the Institute of Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Religious Studies, Comparative Literature, Poetics and Theory, and the Medieval and Renaissance Center; students benefit from university-sponsored excavations and collections and the resources of major New York cultural institutions. The MA requires 32 credits including survey sequences in Greek and/or Latin, prose composition/rhetoric, courses in history and archaeology/ancient art, and additional advanced reading courses in the original languages. Program learning outcomes emphasize proficiency in Greek/Latin, research skills with both primary texts and scholarly literature, and contextual interpretation across historical and cultural frames.
