NYU School of Law’s LLM in Legal Theory is an intensive, research-oriented specialization designed to build a foundation for academic careers. Students craft a personalized curriculum with the faculty director, take a compulsory Legal Theory Thesis Seminar, select a fall seminar with an additional writing credit to produce an original scholarly paper of at least 40 pages, and participate in a spring one‑credit Legal Theory Thesis Workshop. At least one colloquium is required, and 4–6 additional credits must be chosen from approved Legal Theory courses. Total degree completion requires 24 credits in Fall and Spring, consistent with LLM degree rules .
