NYU College of Arts & Science’s Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MEIS) offers an interdisciplinary BA that examines the Middle East from North Africa to Central Asia and from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, with particular focus on the period after the emergence of Islam. The major enables students to master a regional language (Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, or Urdu) and develop broad, comparative understanding through coursework with specialists across multiple disciplines. Students may also take cross-listed courses in departments such as Anthropology, Art History, Comparative Literature, Hebrew and Judaic Studies, History, Politics, Religious Studies, and Sociology. An honors option requires completing all major requirements, at least two graduate-level courses (GPA ≥3.0 in those), and a 50–60 page thesis supervised by MEIS faculty, subject to eligibility (CAS residency and GPA thresholds).
