NYU College of Arts & Science’s undergraduate MARS program (housed in the Medieval and Renaissance Center, MARC) focuses on the history, institutions, languages, literatures, thought, faith, art, and music of Europe, the Atlantic, and the Mediterranean world, and their global connections from Timbuktu to India to Mongolia, from the fall of the Roman Empire to about 1700. It emphasizes the diversity of the period and engages roots of contemporary questions (e.g., freedom, equality, environmental responsibility; and systems such as racism, colonialism, environmental exploitation). Students design individualized programs with the director and faculty, linking coursework to NYU’s humanities faculty, NYC libraries/museums/performing arts, and study-away sites. The curriculum includes interdisciplinary seminars and workshops (e.g., MEDI-UA 901 Workshop; MEDI-UA 992 Interdisciplinary Seminar) and offers an Honors track requiring a senior thesis (MEDI-UA 999/998) for students meeting GPA thresholds.
