NYU’s BA in Art & Art History provides a rigorous, wide-ranging education in the history and theory of art from antiquity to the present, while integrating practice-based studio art and design. Students study global art traditions—including ancient, medieval, Renaissance, baroque, modern, contemporary, East Asian, South Asian, Islamic, Latin American, African, Oceanic, Pre‑Columbian, and Native American art—and engage with media such as painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, graphic media, decorative arts, and aspects of urban design. The program leverages New York City’s museums, galleries, and architectural sites for on‑site learning and offers study‑away opportunities at NYU global sites. It is one of the few undergraduate programs with extensive offerings in conservation and museology, publishes a student journal (Ink & Image), and offers an honors track culminating in a senior thesis defense. Graduates pursue roles in museums, galleries, auction houses, nonprofits, or advanced study leading to careers as curators, conservators, and academic art historians.
