The BA in European and Mediterranean Studies at NYU’s College of Arts & Science is a dynamic, interdisciplinary major examining Europe’s politics, culture, society, and the Mediterranean region. Students tailor coursework to interests in contemporary issues, historical developments shaping modern Europe, and deepen proficiency in a European language. Majors take courses in CEMS and related departments spanning contemporary history, political science, international relations, cultural and regional studies (EU, Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean). All majors must achieve language fluency above the intermediate level in a major European language other than English and complete study abroad (typically at an NYU European site). The major prepares for careers in public service, NGOs, cultural institutions, international business and law, media, education, and provides a strong foundation for graduate study. An honors option requires 10 courses (40 credits) including an independent study leading to a 40–60 page thesis, a 3.65 GPA, and consultation with faculty via EURO-UA 950 and enrollment in EURO-UA 998.
