Arab Crossroads Studies (ACS) at NYU Abu Dhabi examines the Arab world’s historical and contemporary interactions with neighboring regions from a multidisciplinary perspective spanning history and religion, society and politics, and arts and literature. Majors complete 14 courses: four required core courses (Emergence of the Modern Middle East; Anthropology and the Arab World; Introduction to Modern Arabic Literature; Problems and Methods in Arab Crossroads Studies), a minimum of four electives organized across the three areas (at least one pre-1800), and a two-semester senior Capstone project. Students must demonstrate intermediate ability in Modern Standard Arabic, typically through four college semesters of Arabic or equivalent proficiency by examination or prior coursework, which can be taken at NYUAD or across NYU’s global network. The program leverages Abu Dhabi’s location at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe and offers regional study opportunities and lectures to deepen engagement with the Arab world’s social, cultural, and intellectual diversity.
